Wind in your sales?

I had the pleasure yesterday of taking my three sons to see the parade of tall ships as they sailed past Fort Monroe in Hampton, VA. It was a once in a lifetime experience with it being the 200 year celebration of the War of 1812.

The only problemo was that there was zero point zero wind. All the majestic tall ships from around the world had their sails tied up and were using good old diesel to drive them from Lynnhaven to downtown Norfolk.

It made me think of them being similar to a successful business. Lead generation is crucial to its sustainability. For them, leads are the wind. But what does a business do when there aren’t any leads to catch? They must rely on other means to generate sales. Like the ships, they have other means to get by.

It begs the question: what do you do in your business when the phone isn’t ringing or people aren’t knocking down your door? You have to take advantage of the slack wind times to prospect old leads, tidy up your ship, execute on more aggressive follow up procedures or just plain cold call? Whatever it is, why wait for the wind to blow and then stop doing them? Do them anyways!
