In spite of the fact that many people we know are quite outgoing and seemingly confident; a vast number of people are uncomfortable with the idea of networking. The idea of talking to someone you have never met may be daunting, but learn to take it in stride with these suggestions:

The best way to start a conversation is by listening – approach a conversation from the angle of what you may learn about someone else, instead of what you are going to say.

Be Honest and Humble – Lose the PR pitch and talk honestly about challenges.  We can all put a good spin on our stories, but judge the time and situation. We can lose valuable information if we are always selling ourselves and businesses.

Everyone has something interesting to share –Step outside of your normal circle and meet people who are different from you.  We can learn the most from people whom we have very little in common with and it can help us to think outside the box.  You can even make it your goal to meet and learn from at least 2 or 3 new people at a networking event.
