For Lieutenant Colonel Mike Drowley, there are things worse than death.  Accidentally killing one of your own men, or going home alive when one or more of your men does not.  His mindset – total devotion to your people – translates into a crucial leadership lessons for anyone in a leadership position, and that is, without a doubt, he will be there for them. This is how trust is formed. So how do we in business begin to truly look after our own, in our business? We first have to ask ourselves two questions: “why are you building a business in the first place” and “at the end of your life, what do you want to be the reason you built your business?” Turn your answer to these questions into day-today action by doing these 5 things:

  1. Roam the halls and get to know your employees.
  2. Recognize good work publicly.
  3. Tell the personal story of how you got started—often.
  4. Mark what you represent (using symbolism, logos, colors).
  5. Give employees responsibility.

Your company exists to make more than just money, it exists to advance something…and it should be others.
