Three simple questions can help you find out what would make them love their jobs. Anyone in management spends some of their time figuring out how to get people to want to do their job and do it with gusto. So help them, help you by asking these questions:

  1. Why are you here? Hopefully their answer is more than just to collect a paycheck! You want to find out what they want and hope for in their job, and then you figure out how to help them get there (training, help with education, breakfast once a week if goals are met, etc.).
  2. What do you want that I can give you? This will largely depend on your industry, but some answers may be prestige and visibility, advancement in corporate offices or increased skill and training.
  3. Can I let you own your project? People work the hardest on things that are theirs to shape and manage on their own. The key is to fit the right person to the right project (answer to #2 can help).
