How Do You Define Your Brand?

November 21, 2012

Daily ReadHow Do You Define Your Brand?

Volvo is perceived as the class-leading “safe automobile” and Walmart’s brand is “Save Money, Live Better”. Great brands stand for something, so that means you need to clearly define your brand – but how? There are two simple things you need to know to define your brand:

  1. It’s better to be clear than to be clever – forget the poetry and cutesy; clarity is what matters most. You want to find the right focus for your business. Be selective and find the target window where you have a specific expertise and focus on that for your branding.
  2. It’s better to be different than to be better (from a branding point of view) – you may not have the resources to outspend everyone else, but by carving out a distinction you can easily set yourself apart. By focusing you can be different, and then establish your credentials to support that difference. Think about what you really enjoy about your business. What are you most passionate about or where do you have the most fun? That’s what you want to focus on.

To be effective, you’ll need to be selective, so why not select what you love to do? Your odds of success will automatically increase; because all of us work harder on the things we enjoy the most.
