Daily Read – Need a Little Push to Get Your Business Started?

You’ve got a great idea, created a strong business plan and have a prototype ready to go – but are you really ready? Aside from the rare, insanely confident entrepreneur, most people need a nerve boost. Here are 6 ways to give yourself the kick in the pants you need to get started:

  1. Practice. Prepare then practice your presentation on friends and colleagues before making the pitch to your potential client.
  2. Start with a small fish. While it may be tempting to jump right in with your top prospect, start first with a client you can afford to lose. This will give you a chance to modify your pitch or product for the big fish.
  3. Make cold calls. Anyone in sales will eventually have to make cold calls. You will deal with a lot of rejection, but you will also learn which openings work best and what to avoid.
  4. Start Blogging. While a more passive approach it can have real impact on your success and get you noticed by others in your industry. Promote your website and blog when making sales calls and on your business cards.
  5. Network. Join professional associations, attend functions and luncheons and make contacts. The goal is not to sell at these functions, but to make contacts. Suggest a later meeting to discuss your business if someone asks.
  6. Exhibit at a conference. The key is to make sure the conference is a good fit for your company and the buyer profile is a good match.
