Having an office full of young, productive, inspired employees is awesome! It’s very exciting to watch them grow into the “movers and shakers” of tomorrow. So once you promote these employees into management you need to teach them to manage– situations and promote ideas for their team, thus teaching them not to micromanage. As their manager you can do 3 things to help them succeed:

  1. Training. A management training program is ideal. Role-play and go through interesting situations that the managers may face. Training is not just a one-time effort, but continual.
  2. Open door Policy. Anyone should be able to go in and ask a question or pitch a gripe.
  3. Actively make yourself available at lunches or after work. For anyone at any level. Ideas will flow more freely when guards are down the team feels comfortable and close to the managers.

Sometimes managing all the details is needed, but if you set up your company culture to empower employees, you’ve got to let them know to step back and just listen.
