Making modification to your marketing plan or fine tuning a product both seem like changes in the right direction, but before you pursue the changes make sure they are both useful and smart. Not as easy as it sounds? Follow these two rules of thumb:

Rule #1: Watch every number — and hear every voice. Pay close attention to customer feedback, whether it’s via email or social media; work with strong clients that would be willing to do a one-on-one or focus group when improving products/services. Don’t forget to look within, at your own employees that use your product/services for suggestions too.

Rule #2: Look out for the unexpected. Always be on the lookout for inspiration in unexpected places – on t.v., while out with friends, ideas can strike you anywhere or anytime.

Research (look high and low), listen (to everyone in all your networks), and focus (filter your ideas). Repeat.
