Daily ReadAre You a Natural Born Leader?

The world is filled with countless leaders- some are great motivators, some are great communicators while others inspire those around them to reach their potential. Then there are the countless number of leaders who are woefully incompetent and extremely misguided about their effectiveness. So how do you know if you are a natural born leader who has what it takes to really lead? Here is a simple three- point assessment. “You know if you are a great leader if…”

You lead only when you have to, not all the time. You’ve met the ‘quick to take charge and cling on to it for dear life’ type of leader’; always opinionated, usually impatient and frequently brusque. A great leader will assess each situation on its merits, and will only take charge when their position, the situation, and/or the needs of the moment demand it.

You see much more than you do. Many business executives confuse leadership with action and believe that constant motion somehow generates leadership as a byproduct. True leaders understand the value of action, but it isn’t their only tool. In fact, it isn’t even their primary tool. They see more than everyone else: answers, solutions, patterns, problems, opportunities and threats via thinking, understanding, contemplation and interpretation.

You change people. They achieve outcomes. If you’re fixated on outcomes to the extent that you manipulate and bully others to achieve those outcomes, then you aren’t leading at all, you’re dictating. True leadership means building strong, capable teams that are goal- achievement-oriented.
