Recent studies have shown that morning people are often more successful than evening people because, as a group, they tend to be proactive. Of course the old saying the early bird gets the worm is forever engrained in our minds, it doesn’t mean it’s engrained in our lifestyle.  If you’re more of a night owl than a morning lark – is it possible to change your ways? Yes, but it will take some work to adjust your internal clock.

  1. Put yourself on a morning schedule, but don’t sweat bed time.  Wake up, exercise and eat at the same time every day, including the weekends. Bedtime will sort itself out – just go to bed when you’re tired.
  2. Use a smart alarm. Use a smartphone app like Smart Alarm or Math Alarm that requires you to solve a math problem to turn it off or set it to snooze. Engaging your brain helps you wake up.
  3. Let in the light. Whether it’s natural or artificial, light is significant because it tells the brain that the day has begun.
  4. Get some exercise. Exercising first thing in the morning helps wake up the body.
  5. Have a protein-heavy meal for breakfastCarbohydrates make you sleepy.
  6. Avoid the urge to nap. It will help you fall asleep earlier.

Treat yourself with a sunrise run and you’ll know what you’ve missing (and what top CEO’s have been privileged to experience.
